Old Fashioned Tomato Soup

1 14.5 oz. can of tomatoes (you can use almost any tomato; whole, chopped or fresh ripe tomatoes)

If you use fresh tomatoes remove the peel by dipping the tomato into boiling water and then into cold water this will allow the peel to come off easily. I would use about 1 1/2 to 2 cups of tomatoes if I was using fresh instead of canned.

Bring the tomato to a boil, use a fork or a potato masher to smush the tomato up a bit. Add 1/2 tsp. soda to the tomato. Add 1 qt. milk, 1 tbsp. butter or margarine. Heat until it is close to a boil, but do not boil. Remove from heat and serve.

I like to add some bits of cheese to the soup bowl and soda crackers on the side. I don't add salt and pepper while cooking this I let everyone add their own.

This makes 4 one cup servings.

ALso you can use tomato sauce if you don't like chunks of tomato.
