Old Fashioned Pumpkin Bread

1 2/3 cups flour
1/4 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
3/4 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/3 cup shortening
1 1/3 cups sugar
1/2 tsp. vanilla
2 eggs (beated)
1/3 cup water
1/2 cup nuts
1 cup canned pumpkin

Mix flour, baking powder, soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Cream shortening, sugar, and vanilla together then add the eggs. Stir in the pumpkin then stir in the dry ingredients alternately with the water until smooth. Add nuts and beat. Pour in loaf pan and bake at 350° for 45 minutes or until a knife inserted in the middle comes out clean. Loosen bread in pan by runing a knife around the edge of the bread then the tip out onto wax paper. Tip back so the top is up.

Optional Frosting

Mix 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar with 2 tbsp. butter or margarine, add one tablespoon of milk to it at a time until it reaches a medium thin texture then frost the loaf.
